WSL US Open of Surfing 2025

WSL US Open of Surfing 2025 Preview

As every year, Huntington Beach will host the world’s best surfers for the third event of the Challenger Series, starting on July 30. Nerves are building among the competitors, as there are fewer and fewer chances to prove to the world that they have what it takes to qualify for the coveted World Tour.

The WSL US Open can be considered the most important event of the Challenger Series, as its prize money is higher than the rest. On top of that, the US Open has been held for many years, making it one of the most historic and iconic events in the WSL calendar.

Huntington is a wave where surfers who specialize in small waves have an advantage, especially those with flair and spark in their surfing. Looking to the forecast, Looks like once again we’re going to be dealing with small waves, so surfers who know how to make the most out of smaller conditions will have a huge advantage.

All signs point to the Brazilians, historically known for their talent in small waves like those at Huntington, having a slight advantage. That said, at this level, any surfer is capable of beating anyone, even a Hawaiian more known for charging bigger waves.

WSL US Open of Surfing 2025 – Favorites and Underdogs

MENS:

Favorites:

  • Mateus Herdy: He is one of the biggest aerialists in the world, if he keeps his head straight, he’s capable of beating anyone.
  • Kanoa Igarashi: The Japanese star is in the US Open draw and looks fully committed to winning. It’s one of his favorite events, and it shows. He’s one of the best in the world when it comes to surfing small waves.
  • Samuel Pupo: The younger Pupo brother is hungry for a win. There’s no doubt he’s one of the best when it comes to rhythm and technique, but lately he’s been struggling to find the best waves. Hopefully he gets the win — he deserves it.

Underdogs:

  • Taro Watanabe: His talent is among the best in the world. If he stays focused at the US Open, he could definitely be a dark horse , he’s playing at home.
  • Jorgann Couzinet: Even though Jorgann is tall and powerful, that doesn’t stop him from surfing small waves incredibly well. He’s in great physical shape, and this year might just be his year.

WOMENS:

Favorites:

  • Sawyer Lindblad: She’s definitely one of the best surfers in the world, especially on her backside. For us, she’s the number one favorite to win the event.
  • Sally Fitzgibbons: Sally is a small-wave specialist — she’s got the flow and spark needed to make the most out of Huntington’s small surf.
  • Vahine Fierro: Vahine has a lot of flow on her backside. Just because she’s a big-wave expert at Teahupo’o doesn’t mean she can’t handle the small surf at Huntington. Watch out for her.

Underdogs:

  • Tya Zebrowski: She’s still just a kid, but make no mistake — she’s already one of the best in the world. The best girl out there.
  • Annette Gonzalez Etxabarri: She´s a sleeper. If she keeps a clear head, she can have a great run at the US Open in Huntington.
